Christian Levens

Christian Levens is currently attending The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) as a Graduate Teaching Assistant to complete a Masters Degree in Jazz Performance. Though drum set is his primary instrument, he is fluent in all areas of percussion including orchestral drumming and marching band. At UTA, Levens performed with the drum line, numerous small jazz combos (including the Burkholder Combo, the premier small group at the University), as well as the top big band, the Jazz Orchestra.  This past summer, Levens participated in a 4 month jazz residency at the House of Blues and Jazz in Shanghai, China. Directly after, Levens studied a full semester abroad at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Sweden.

Outside of the UTA campus, Levens is heavily involved with the Keller Central Band program in Fort Worth, Texas. Over the past seven years, he has helped this young program grow into a respected and competitive organization. His responsibilities include teaching the drum line during the fall season, assisting in writing/arranging show music, and teaching both percussion and drum set lessons. With the aid of Levens’ teaching, the Keller Central Band Program has become a finalist in all Bands of America events during the fall season (2010-2014), has received sweepstakes during concert season (2012-2014), and won the NTCAA championships for Winter Drumline (2014). His private lesson studio consists of nearly 40 students every year from middle and high schools in the Keller and Birdville Independent School Districts. Levens' students have consistently had high levels of success in both TMEA All-State auditions as well as TJEA Jazz Band auditions.

Levens has studied with Kevin McNulty, Evan Blackard, Brian Lowe, Jim Yakkas, Michael Varner, Mike Drake, Joe McCarthy, Adonis Rose, Stockton Helbing, and Stefan Karlsson. With their expertise, he has grown both as a teacher and performer. He currently plays weekly gigs with several small jazz combos around the Dallas/Fort Worth area, including hotspots like the Scat Jazz Lounge, the Perot Museum, the Free Man Cafe and the Balcony Club. In addition to studying and playing with different jazz groups, Levens has been the lead drummer for the North Richland Hills Baptist Church for the past seven years.
